  Upcoming record: Godowsky's Java Suite

After the successfull Flotow recording, Carl and Sterling get together for a new project.
The CD will include the fabled Java Suite by the Polish pianist composer Leopold Godowsky.
Godowsky, often described as the "Pianist of Pianists" was mostly renowned for his paraphrases of piano pieces by other composers, which he enhanced with ingenious contrapuntal devices and rich chromatic harmonies. In his original Java Suite he captured impressions of scenes in Indonesia, gleaned during his tour of 1922 to Singapore, Java, Bali, and beyond.
The result is a colourful fresco, painted in traditional Indonesian harmonies with a touch of European impressionism.
The recording, which will also contain some of the Studies on Chopin's Etudes, will be released in the summer of 2010.

  Danse macabre

"Zig, zig, zag, on his violin.
The winter wind blows, and the night is dark,
Moans are heard in the linden trees.
White skeletons pass through the gloom,
Running and leaping in their shrouds..."

Carl's new 2009 programme "Danse macabre" explores sheer virtuosity, theatricality and mystique of piano Romanticism. The seventy-minutes-long recital includes brilliant works by Fryderyk Chopin, Franz Liszt and Vladimir Horowitz, that have profoundly shaped all music of the period, and culminates in a mysterious atmosphere of Saint-Saëns' famed "Danse macabre", based on an old French superstition.

Concerts booked in Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic, the United States and Canada.

Carl was awarded the Helsingborg cultural prize for his achievements with Flotow's Piano concertos.
The prize was handed over at a ceremony held at the Dunkers Kulturhus on Friday, 3th December 2008, by a delegate of the Swedish Ministry of culture.

The CD has already been widely acclaimed by international critics, e.g. The Gramophone, Klassikmagazin, Klassieke Zaken and Classical Lost and Found.

Carl's performance was recognized as one to perfection with great sensitivity and precision, and he was said to be a fine advocat for both concertos, playing in a spirited and rythmically bouyant way.

  In the genius company

May 17th, during the concert in the Bělá pod Bezdězem castle, Carl met a unique opportunity. The grand piano from 19th century on which he performed proved to have quite a history.
The piano has been bequested to the castle by the opera singer of the Prague National Theatre. However, after investigations for its previous owners a great surprise comes... According to the newest research the instrument with a well-preserved Vienna mechanique once belonged to no one else but the Czech music grandeur, Bedřich Smetana.
