Military BeethovenMost of the pieces on this album have been designated 'WoO' (Works without Opus Number) or bear the numbering from the Hess catalogue of unpublished pieces. These include the piano transcription of the topically programmatic Wellington's Victory and the genial variations on Rule Britannia and God Save the King. The Marches, Menuets and Ecossaises derive from a variety of sources, while there is a strangely tragic aspect to the Waltz in C minor.

Beethoven fragmentsThe 18 sketches listed under Bia. 96 give a fascinating picture of Beethoven experimenting with possible ideas. Varying in length, key and mood, these sketches are described by Holsbergen, co-funder with Mark Zimmer of The Unheard Beethoven, and can ve seen on Adagio and Allegro for Piano, Biamonti 96 and associated sketches (1800-1802).

BurgmullerIn 1832 German-born Friedrich Burgmüller settled in Paris where he became internationally admired for his salon pieces and studies. Written for the burgeoning market for piano teaching material, the set of 25 Easy and Progressive Studies, Op. 100 was soon followed by the 18 Charecteristic Studies, Op. 109, a continuation of the earlier set, each piece bearing a charming title. They continue to provide a basis for teaching to this day.

COVER Grieg EvjuEdvard Grieg first met Percy Grainger in London in 1906 and the two became good friends. Grieg invited the ‘Young Apollo’ to spend the summer of 1907 with him at Troldhaugen where they revised the famous Piano Concerto in A minor. Their alterations resulted in the final edition ‘sanctioned by Grieg himself’. Norwegian composer Helge Evju has taken up the challenge to compose a work based on incomplete concerto fragments by Grieg, creating a romantic and beautiful companion.
